Local Student Earns National Merit Scholarship
Charles Crouse of Parkville High was among four recent graduates to earn an award.
Parkville High School graduate Charles M. Crouse was one of four recent graduates of Baltimore County Public Schools who were named as National Merit Scholarship winners.
Crouse, named in the final round of 2011 high school graduates receiving scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities, plans to study biology/research. He was awarded a National Merit University of Maryland Scholarship.
The other award recipients are Johann M. Amberger (Towson High), Laura E. Greenbaum (Towson High) and Kathleen Schultz (Dulaney High).

The college-sponsored scholarships vary from $500-$2,000 per year and usually can be renewed throughout the time a student is an undergraduate in college.
The National Merit Scholarship program started in 1955. About 8,300 students earned these scholarships this year, totaling almost $35 million awarded. Overall, a total of 4,800 Merit Scholarships were sponsored by 198 colleges and universities.

In this area, a total of 11 Baltimore County Public Schools graduates got scholarships through the program, including one corporate-sponsored scholarship, two National Merit scholarships and eight college-sponsored scholarships.
