Harford County Students Go Back to School on Monday
Find out about school bus laws in Maryland.

As students head out Monday morning for the first day of Harford County Public Schools, parents will not be the only ones keeping an eye out for their little ones as they head onto the bus or across the street.
“Police will be out to enforce those laws aimed to protect our children,” the Aberdeen Police Department reported.
For drivers, the Maryland State Highway Administration provides a refresher on school bus laws:

- Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to load or unload children, and drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.
- Vehicles must stop when a bus flashes red lights and extends its stop signal arm.
- Vehicles may not pass a bus until the flashing red lights and signals are turned off.
- On a two-lane road, both lanes must stop for the bus.
- On a two-lane road with a center turn lane, all lanes must stop for the bus.
- On a four-lane road with no median, all lanes must stop for the bus.
- On a four-lane road with a median, only vehicles headed in the same direction as the bus must stop.
- Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit.
