📰 News we're reading

1. Frederick County may need to get taller to address affordable housing (wypr.org) — Frederick residents face a growing housing crunch, with studies showing the county and city need tens of thousands of new units by 2035, pushing leaders to consider taller, denser development. Locals and housing advocates debate how to balance affordability, historic character, and green space, while new zoning ideas like shared individual living units are explored for people struggling to find safe, attainable homes.

2. Catellus Agreement Would Bring $110 Million in Community Benefits to Adamstown, Frederick County (wfmd.com) — A major development deal for the Frederick Digital Campus in Adamstown could bring $110 million in school upgrades, a new community center, workforce training funds, and parkland benefits to Frederick County residents. The proposal also scales back data center plans, sharply cuts water use, and is now open for public comment through September 10 before formal county review.

3. New manufacturing plant opened in US for ATC modernization program (atc-network.com) — A new 87,000‑square‑foot manufacturing plant has opened in Frederick to build critical voice‑communication equipment for the nation’s modernized air traffic control system. Federal transportation leaders say the $40‑million facility will support U.S. production, create local high‑quality jobs, and help keep the modernization effort on track for completion by 2028.

4. United CDL School in Frederick closed for alleged fraud (foxbaltimore.com) — United CDL School in Frederick has been shut down by federal transportation officials as part of a nationwide crackdown on allegedly fraudulent trucking schools, leaving its future and any violations unclear. The closure is tied to a politically charged push for stricter CDL rules, which could affect who can train and work as truck drivers in Maryland and beyond.
