12 People Hospitalized After Carbon Monoxide Leak At MoCo Apartment

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Twelve people were hospitalized over Labor Day weekend after a carbon monoxide leak was detected at an apartment complex in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was reported Saturday shortly before 9 a.m. at the StreamSide apartment complex off N. Summit Avenue.

MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said more than 50 people were evaluated after high carbon monoxide readings were detected at three apartment buildings in the Gaithersburg community.

Buildings 420, 422 and 424 were temporarily evacuated after the high readings were detected, according to assistant MCFRS chief David Pazos.

Of the examined individuals, 12 people — four adults and seven children — were hospitalized.

Piringer said the Washington Gas utility was "confident" the source of the leak was an oven that has since been removed from the grounds.

Authorities said the oven was located in building 422.
