GAITHERSBURG, MD — A student was detained Friday for bringing a firearm to a Gaithersburg high school, police said. No injuries were reported.
The Montgomery County Police Department said officers were initially dispatched to Watkins Mill High School, at 10301 Apple Ridge Road, around 11:40 a.m. for a report of a student with a gun.
Police said the school was put on "a 20-minute hold" while authorities searched the grounds. The firearm was confiscated, and the student was detained by officials.
"The scene is secure and there is no additional threat to the Watkins Mill Campus," police said in a post, noting the school has since resumed "normal operations."
While police have not identified the student or indicated whether any charges would be filed, authorities did say the gun was found in the student's backpack.
Also unknown is how officials became aware that a gun was on campus.
The latest incident comes after a similar case unfolded more than two weeks ago, on April 7. That case saw a student bring both a gun and knife onto campus. The school was alerted through an anonymous tip from a community member.
