Montgomery County expands weather network, flood detection to enhance storm preparedness (mymcmedia.org) — Gaithersburg will soon get a new Maryland Mesonet weather station as part of Montgomery County's expanded network to improve storm and flood warnings. Combined with dozens of flood sensors, these stations will give emergency managers more precise, real-time data, helping protect local neighborhoods from tornadoes, flash floods, and other extreme weather tied to climate change.
2. Gaithersburg's Old Towne Plaza renamed in honor of Sidney Katz (mymcmedia.org) — Olde Towne Plaza in Gaithersburg is being renamed Sidney A. Katz Plaza, honoring the lifelong resident and former mayor who helped guide developments like Kentlands and Downtown Crown. Local and state officials celebrated Katz's five decades of public service and his family's century-long roots in the city during a ceremony near the site of his family's former department store.
3. Accused Killer Of Beloved Soccer Coach Captured After Leaving Gaithersburg Motel (UPDATED) (dailyvoice.com) — A Gaithersburg man wanted in the fatal shooting of a well-known soccer coach was arrested without incident after leaving a local motel, ending a four-day regional manhunt. Police say surveillance video tied the 21-year-old to the deadly encounter outside Quincy's South Bar & Grille in Rockville, and he's now held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit pending a bond hearing.
4. Gaithersburg man sentenced to 14 years for fentanyl sale leading to teen's death (mdstatewire.com) — A 27-year-old Gaithersburg man has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for selling fentanyl to a 15-year-old girl, leading to her death in Montgomery County. Investigators tied him to a late-night drug sale arranged over Instagram and later found drug paraphernalia at his Gaithersburg home; he will also serve five years of supervised release.
