Andrea Faris Roberts Recognized for Adoption Efforts

At the Mayor and City Council meeting on December 20, 2010, a certificate of recognition was presented to Gaithersburg resident Andrea Faris Roberts for her efforts associated with the adoption of special needs children.

"Gaithersburg is filled with so many good people doing amazing things," said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz.  "It is a pleasure to join with the City Council in publicly recognizing Ms. Roberts' selfless efforts and to honor her for the inspiration she is providing on a global scale."

A mother of two, one of whom has Down's Syndrome, Roberts founded Reece's Rainbow in 2004 as an outreach for new moms of babies with Down's Syndrome.  The nonprofit organization is named for her son.  The program has expanded to become an international orphan ministry, to date assisting with the adoption of more than 350 special needs children throughout the world.  Reece's Rainbow assists with adoption grants, advocacy and birth family support.

Roberts was recently selected by on-line voters as one of six 2010 Reader's Choice Heroes by People Magazine. Earlier this fall Congressman Chris Van Hollen selected Roberts as a 2010 Angel in AdoptionTM, a program that honors the good work of constituents who have enriched the lives of foster and adopted children in the United State and abroad.  Angels in Adoption is coordinated by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute.
