Cabin John Middle School Students Visited CCACC Academy

On February 20, students from Cabin John Middle School visited CCACC Academy for an immersive experience in traditional Chinese arts. The event featured three major forms of traditional craftsmanship: papermaking, clay sculpting, and paper cutting. Through hands-on participation, students gained deeper insights into China's rich history and unique artistic heritage.

The event began with a lesson on the evolution of papermaking, followed by a hands-on session where students created their own handmade paper. Next, during the clay sculpting activity, students crafted clay figurines of the Chinese zodiac animal, the snake, enhancing their understanding of the cultural significance of the zodiac. In the paper-cutting session, students created intricate designs, including window decorations, the character "春 (Spring)," and the panda. They also carefully cut out the phrase "出入平安 (Safe Travels)," learning how traditional Chinese culture embraces wishes for peace and prosperity.

Beyond the rich crafts experience, the event also featured interactive activities. The preschool students from CCACC Academy kicked off the entertainment with a lively song and dance performance, "The Twelve Zodiac Animals," which received enthusiastic applause. Following this, middle school and preschool students engaged in a Chinese character recognition competition. Despite the age gap, both groups showcased impressive literacy skills, demonstrating their enjoyment and sense of accomplishment in learning Chinese.

During lunch, students enjoyed an authentic Chinese meal, with each dish labeled in Chinese characters and pinyin. This thoughtful addition allowed them to enhance their vocabulary while savoring delicious food. As a memorable conclusion to the event, each student received a handmade kite as a souvenir, carrying home a piece of Chinese culture with them.

The Chinese Culture Activity not only provided students with an appreciation of the depth and beauty of Chinese traditions but also laid a solid foundation for future collaboration between CCACC Academy and Cabin John Middle School. We look forward to the next cultural exchange, continuing the mission of sharing and preserving Chinese heritage.
