For nearly 160 years, the Almshouse at the Montgomery County Poor Farm was the last resort for poor people who were unable to take care of themselves due to physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. A look at some of their stories, including how they lived and died, sheds a light on conditions there. Despite the oversight of county officials and the efforts of reformers, the Almshouse was a place where the poor were neglected, abused, and exposed to unsafe conditions until it closed in 1948.

SOME SPECIFICS:
• Once it gets dark, please do not use a bright flashlight and adjust the brightness of electronic devices.
• PARKING: Limited parking for those with accessibility tags is available onsite. Parking is also available at the field at the corner of DeSellum &amp; Rt. 355 – 2 blocks from the park.
• Portable bathroom will be available. There is no running water in the park. Alcohol is not permitted at events in City parks.
Events at Observatory Park could be cancelled or modified at the last moment if conditions, including inclement weather or Covid restrictions limit the event. Please check the Community Museum Facebook page for last minute announcements. Those who pre-register will receive an email with event changes.

On August 22, 2026, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the third annual Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day, bringing together volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public at large to raise funds to launch recent refugees in Montgomery County on the road to self-sufficiency. 
As an interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 churches, synagogues, mosques and other faith and civic groups, NNIA aspires to continue raising funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring in life skills.
“These new neighbors, many of whom helped U.S. military forces and contractors during the war in Afghanistan, are our most recent large wave of immigrants coming to our shores, and they need help resettling and starting their lives,” said Christine King, president of the NNIA board.“We hope this tournament helps provide welcome and much needed funds to help these refugees after living through oppression, war and mortal danger in their home country, while helping acclimate our new neighbors to life in the United States through the universal language of sport.” 
 The eight-team field is full, but some teams still need individual players. If you’d like to join a team as a freelance player, please contact tournament coordinator Melissa Egan above. Tournament organizers are also seeking additional business sponsorships; interested foundations and companies can contribute at <a href="https://ssl.charityweb.net/nnia-maryland/event/sponsorship.htm" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://ssl.charityweb.net/nnia-maryland/event/sponsorship.htm</a>.
