Free Spay/Neuter Services Available to Pets of Low-income
Montgomery County Residents!
The Animals Welfare League of Montgomery County (AWLMC) has received funding from the Maryland Department of Agriculture to provide 100 free spay/neuter procedures for low-income Montgomery County pet owners. For residents who qualify, the program will pay the entire cost of spaying or neutering their cat or dog at no cost. A rabies vaccine will be included for pets that are not up-to-date. Eligibility is based on residency and household income (under $53,500 for a family of four).
The application process involves applying online through the AWLMC website and sending in proof of eligibility (income and residency). The services will be available until the grant in depleted. Pet owners who do not qualify for the free program may be eligible for AWLMCโs low-cost spay/neuter program.

About the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County

The AWLMC operates and maintains a no-kill cat shelter in Montgomery County, MD. Their homelike shelter is located in Olde Towne Gaithersburg and has 5 group-rooms for the cats along with space for floor cats to roam throughout the building. There are cat trees at every window and large climbing trees in the central areas.
The AWLMC provides education and resources for low-cost spay/neuter services; keeping animals from reproducing litters that would ultimately end up in municipal shelters. In 2010, the AWLMC launched their first Spay/Neuter initiative, offering 100 free sterilization surgeries to the cats of Montgomery County residents facing economic hardship. Since 2010, over 2,500 pets have been sterilized through the AWLMC program. This program is successful when fewer unwanted litters are taken to municipal shelters.
The AWLMC provides pet food to pet owners who are facing economic hardship so they have the means necessary to keep their companion animals. The Chompers Pet Food Bank, started in 2010, addresses such a need in the community and it is now a permanent part of the services provided to Montgomery County pet owners. To date, over 22,000 pounds of free pet food has been distributed to 1,000 pet owners in need.
