Community partnership helps promote affordable housing in Montgomery County

GAITHERSBURG, MD (November 4, 2014) — Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland (HFHMM) partnered with Sandy Spring Bank to help finance its recently completed Maple Hill community, a 19 townhome project that made simple, decent and affordable housing possible for hard working, low-income families in need of a hand up and not a hand-out.

In September, HFHMM hosted approximately 200 community members at the Maple Hill dedication celebration and towards the end of October, the families began moving into their newly purchased homes. It is only through community partners like Sandy Spring Bank that this project became a reality.

“For the past four years, Sandy Spring Bank has served as one of our financial partners in the Maple Hill project, working closely with us to navigate the complex financing challenges,” said John Paukstis, Executive Director of HFHMM. “We were also delighted to work with a local organization that shares our commitment to improving the communities we serve.”

Taking time to understand Habitat’s unique needs, Sandy Spring Bank worked to create a sustainable financing model that enables HFHMM to continue its partnership with each of the families and plan for future affordable homeownership projects in our community.

“As an organization with deep roots in the region, we are honored to partner with Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland, because they share in our commitment to improving the communities we serve. We are confident that this partnership will result in a lasting impact on the 19 families who will now have access to a safe and affordable place to live,” said Ronda McDowell, Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer.

HFHMM’s mission is to provide affordable housing solutions to low-income families living or working in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. New construction projects, like Maple Hill, are just one way HFHMM provides homeownership solutions to the local community. HFHMM is only able to complete its mission through the generosity of local partners such as Sandy Spring Bank.
