Even though we rarely hear anything about ham radio operators they are the go to source when there are disasters such as floods earthquakes fires tornados. Most operators have backup sources so they can broadcast when conventional power fails. You must have a license but the latest tests are not that difficult and there is plenty of help. Other two way radio's are very limited in range most about 2 to 5 miles under ideal conditions. You no longer need to know morse code, although you may want to just because. If you continue to upgrade your license you will learn a lot about computers, electronics, even how to build your own devices, very interesting hobby. It is no longer an option to have backup plans in emergencies so support your local ham radio operators by giving them room for their equipment such as towers antennas etc. There are many social events, hamfests and wonderful people and any age can participate, the whole family can join in and have fun talking around the world bouncing signals off the moon satellites even phone calls from repeaters have fun with this exciting underrated group.
