Teen Charged After Bringing Weapon To Magruder High School: Police

DERWOOD, MD — A 15-year-old student is facing charges after bringing a weapon to Colonel Zadok Magruder High School on Thursday, police said.

Montgomery County Police said in a release that the teen boy was charged with first- and second-degree assault, possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, and disruption of a school day.

The Department of Juvenile Services authorized the detention of the student, police said.

Officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and the Montgomery County Police Department were first called to the Derwood school shortly after 8:45 a.m.

MCPD said school security was investigating a report of a student with a gun when they determined that a second student was in possession of a knife. Both incidents were separate.

The knife was confiscated, and the student was subject to disciplinary action by Montgomery County Public Schools.

Authorities said the 15-year-old boy's assault charge stemmed from the teenager attacking an MCPS administrator and school security. A BB gun belonging to the teen was recovered from the scene.

The police department did not state how security staffers were alerted to a gun on campus.

Magruder High School is one of several MCPS schools selected for the VOLT-AI pilot program, which was announced in February to help strengthen school safety.

VOLT-AI, according to the school district, works in step with MCPS' security cameras and flags "certain situations that may need attention." A trained school staffer reviews all incidents highlighted by the system.

The development comes as Montgomery County Public Schools nears the end of its second week of the 2026-27 school year.
