Detailed Data Collection Proves to be Winning Formula for 7th Grade Science Fair
Seventh graders started working on Science Fair projects in November, writing, planning, building, and conducting research and data analysis

Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences Middle School Science Teacher Erin Farah said judges of this year’s Seventh Grade Science Fair were impressed with student projects, noting well-organized posters, clear explanations of experiments, and thoughtful reflection on findings.
This year’s winners were:
- First Place -- Colby M. tested the effectiveness of different water-based solutions for keeping flowers fresh. Judges noted that data collected was particularly comprehensive. Overall, this project showed extensive attention to detail and excellent execution.
- Second Place -- Jesse R. measured color changes on egg shells exposed to tea, coffee, and soda. Egg shells are similar to tooth enamel, so the purpose of the experiment was to compare the drinks’ impact on tooth enamel.
- Third Place (tie) -- Jordan T. tested how different designs of paper airplanes impacted flight distance. Jack B. conducted taste tests with different colored lemonade to see if color changed taste perceptions.
Seventh graders started working on Science Fair projects in November, writing, planning, building, and conducting research and data analysis. Earlier in the fall, Mrs. Farah led the class through the process of conducting a science fair experiment. The class grew kale, spinach, and arugula from seeds and then conducted an experiment to measure the impact of talking to the plants. Through this process, they learned about the scientific method, variables, and drawing a conclusion. They also learned about the writing style that is appropriate for a scientific lab report. Participation in the Science Fair is a graduation requirement for all Barnesville students.
