UPDATE: 3 People Hurt After Car Crashes Into Apartment Building

Three people are hurt after a car crashes into an apartment building in Damascus Friday.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Three people are injured after a vehicle crashed into a three-story apartment building in Damascus Friday, according to officials. The driver and two residents were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The car smashed through the double doors of the garden-style apartment building, located in the 26000 block of Brigadier Place, around 3:45 p.m.

"A driver of a vehicle apparently backed into a space and hit the building here. These are three-story condo apartments. [The driver] moved around, positioned again, pulled forward and then crashed into the building through some double doors," Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said.

Three people, including the driver, were injured during the incident. Among the injured was a resident who was knocked down by the vehicle.

According to Piringer, the resident came out to investigate what had happened and was hit by the car. The resident was then trapped under some retaining wall.

"The driver, for whatever reason, moved forward — lurched forward — and knocked that person down. [The person] was actually trapped underneath some retaining wall, which resulted in [the person] receiving less than serious injuries."

When the car drove into the building, another person was injured by flying debris, Piringer added.

The building inspector was called to the scene. The incident has displaced one family, according to officials.
