2011 Maryland 4A Basketball Tournaments Set To Tip Off

Area teams gear up for the season-ending state tournaments.

In the first round of the Maryland 4A Girls Basketball Tournament, 12th-seeded (2-17, 1-15 league) is scheduled to travel to 5th seeded Great Mills of St. Mary’s County. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, according to HighSchoolSports.net where Glen Burnie posts their schedule. The Lady Gophers are led by Mia Carr. Should they defeat Great Mills (8-13, 8-10 league), the Lady Gophers will advance to play the winner of the Broadneck-Leonardtown game.

’s girls’ squad (14-6, 10-6 league), the sixth seed, hosts county rival and 11th seed Severna Park (13-9, 12-5 league) Saturday, with the winner playing another Anne Arundel competitor, South River (15-6, 13-2 league). South River has a first-round bye. The Lady Knights are led by senior forward Denver Clyde, who averages 21 points and 12 rebounds a game. On Feb. 15, Severna Park defeated the Lady Knights by 11 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m, according to Head Coach Al Pindell.

On the boys’ side, 13th seed North County (8-15, 5-11 league) plays fourth seed Annapolis (19-4, 12-4 league) Friday, with the winner going up against the winner of another county matchup between and Arundel. Jordan Kess, Kevin Jackson and Matthew Baker lead the Knights.

The Glen Burnie boys (18-4, 13-3 league), seeded second, enters the tournament with a first-round bye and will play the winner of the South River-Great Mills game on Monday.
