Belle Grove, Park Elementaries To Offer New Healthy Food Options

Students at the elementary schools will have access to additional fruits and vegetables under a program from the Department of Agriculture.

Students at Belle Grove and Park elementary schools will have some expanded healthy options in their school lunches beginning in August.

The schools are two of six in the county that will receive funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, according to a press release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Belle Grove and Park will share $106,000 in federal money, or about $50 per child, according to the press release.

The stated goal of the program is to “cultivate” healthier students. To achieve the program’s goals, schools are given free reign to try new initiatives. In past years, schools have offered traveling carts with fruits and vegetables or set up special kiosks.

There will be 145 schools across the state participating in the program, with more than $3 million set aside from the federal government.
