Blocked Sewer Main Causes Spill In Glen Burnie
Anne Arundel County authorities say a sewer main blockage sent 34,000 gallons of wastewater into a Glen Burnie area creek.

GLEN BURNIE, MD – A sewer main blocked by tree roots Sunday afternoon caused a wastewater overflow in the Glen Burnie area. Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works crews responded to the 18-inch gravity main in a wooded area near Highland Drive, where an estimated 34,000 gallons of wastewater entered Marley Creek before the spill was contained.
Signs alerting the public of the overflow have been posted. The overflow has been reported to the County Department of Health and the Maryland Department of the Environment. County Health officials warn anyone who comes in contact with the affected ground to immediately wash well with soap and warm water. Clothing should also be washed.
The overflow was reported to DPW Emergency services at 1:25 p.m. and the blockage was removed at 4:15 p.m. The spill area was covered with lime and vacuumed. Any necessary clean-up activities will continue Monday, county officials said.
