Boater Presumed Drowned at Patapsco Valley State Park

Divers and search teams from Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties, plus the city of Baltimore, searched for the missing man.

A boater who wasn’t wearing a life vest went missing Tuesday in a pond in Patapsco Valley State Park and is presumed dead, say authorities.

Anne Arundel County divers took part in the search with Baltimore teams; the recovery effort resumed Wednesday led by the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Two men’s canoe took on water and capsized about 12:40 p.m. in an unnamed pond off of the 1300 block River Road near Linthicum, the fire department says.

The NRP says rescuers found both life jackets floating near the water-logged canoe. The victim was Maryland’s 23rd boating fatality this year. Most of those who died were not wearing a life jacket.

One of the men was able to make it to shore safely, but the second boater went under the surface of the water and did not resurface.

A 51-year-old male occupant of the canoe was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries.

Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Dive Team, assisted by members from teams in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, searched the area for the missing 55-year-old man. The will continue today with air and surface searches.
