Ash Wednesday (February 13, 2013) heralds the beginning of fasting in Lent -- the 40 days prior to Easter. On the days before Ash Wednesday (so the historians say) there were feasts of pancakes to use up the supplies of fat, butter and eggs - foods that were forbidden during Lent. Pancakes were an efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a celebratory feast prior to the fast itself.
This year we will celebrate with worship at 10:30am including favorite New Orleans' style jazz hymns and spirituals, followed by a pancake luncheon in the fellowship hall. Tickets may be purchased in advance following the worship service Jan.20, Jan.27 and Feb.3 or at the door on Feb.10. Cost is $2 for adults and children under 12 free. Everyone is welcome!
