GLEN BURNIE, MD — Anne Arundel County hospital workers donated more than 500 Christmas presents to children earlier this month. The toy drive came through The Salvation Army of Central Maryland's Angel Tree Program.

This effort pairs donors with local kids, called angels, to ensure they get gifts on the big day. The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center adopted at least 135 angels. That was the most adoptions from any Anne Arundel County company this year.

Presents included basketball hoops and more than a dozen scooters. It took three SUVs, two pick-up trucks and a pair of cars to haul the load to The Salvation Army Service Center in Glen Burnie.

"To see the tremendous turnout we had from our team members shows our genuine commitment to impacting the lives of those in our local community," hospital President and CEO Kathy McCollum said in a Dec. 9 press release announcing the accomplishment. "I am so proud to work alongside such a selfless and caring group of individuals."

The Salvation Army launched its Angel Tree initiative in 1979. It now serves millions of disadvantaged children around the country.
