Glen Burnie Superfresh Will Close in July

Parent company was unable to find a winning bidder for the store in bankruptcy auction.

The Superfresh store in Glen Burnie will close in July, after the supermarket’s parent company announced that failed to find a buyer during a bankruptcy auction.

Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. announced Wednesday that Glen Burnie location will be one of 13 not included in a sale process that included many of the company's stores in the southern region.

Twenty-five Superfresh stores in Maryland were put up for sale as part of a broad restructuring plan, but only twelve received winning bids.

Stores in Baltimore city, Parkville, Arnold, Brunswick, Chestertown, Lutherville, Cambridge and Washington, DC, will be bought by a joint venture with Mrs. Greens Management Corp. and Village Supermarkets.

The Superfresh in Westminster will be sold to its landlord, Englar Center Limited Partnership, while the Ellicott City location will be purchased by SUPERVALU.

Earlier this month, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea (or A&P, as it is often called) sent out notice that it would be laying off as many as 1,500 workers in Maryland.

It was not immediately clear how many people are employed at the Glen Burnie location.
