Police Searching for Driver in Fatal Hit-and-Run
Police said Henry Smith, 71, of Laurel, was killed when a car struck him on I-295 early Saturday morning.

Maryland State Police are searching for the driver in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on I-295 early Saturday morning.
According to a release, Henry Smith, 71, of Laurel was killed when he was struck by a car shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday on I-295 near the Baltimore Beltway. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy performed Saturday confirmed his death was the result of being struck by a vehicle.
Police said shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday they received a call for a person walking in the roadway on northbound I-295 near I-695. A trooper responded to the area and found the victim lying in the fast lane of I-295, just south of I-695.

There is no information on the vehicle the struck Smith, according to the release. Troopers found broken pieces from a vehicle at the scene, which are being examined.
Police do not know why Smith was walking in the area at the time. No evidence was found that his car had broken down while driving through the area and might have been walking for assistance.
