Robbery Suspect Fatally Shot by Off-Duty Baltimore Officer in Anne Arundel County: Police

The fatal shooting occurred early Saturday morning in Linthicum Heights.

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, MD - An off-duty Baltimore City Police officer shot and killed an armed robbery suspect in Linthicum Heights early Saturday morning, Anne Arundel County Police said.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Homewood Road around 1:36 a.m. for a police involved shooting. The off-duty officer told police he was in the area when the robbery suspect approached him with a handgun. The officer, an 18-year veteran of the department retrieved his service weapon and fired at the suspect.

The suspect, identified as Edel Cato Moreland, 32, of no fixed address, ran from the scene but collapsed on the street a short distance away. Medics pronounced Moreland dead at the scene. An autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death.

Preliminary investigation corroborated the off-duty officer’s story, police said. Moreland’s gun was recovered at the scene and determined to be a realistic looking “all black toy gun resembling a revolver.”
