Speeding Car Rolls, Kills Glen Burnie Driver: Police

A Glen Burnie man who police believe was speeding died early Wednesday when he lost control of his car and it rolled over.

GLEN BURNIE, MD — A Glen Burnie driver who police believe was speeding on MD-10 early Wednesday morning died when his car went off the highway and rolled, according to Anne Arundel County Police. The victim has been identified as Matthew Jerome Phelan, 26, of the 7900 block of Rodman Court in Glen Burnie.

Phelan was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry at what witnesses say was a high rate of speed when he crashed about 12:30 a.m. on MD-10 northbound near Marley Station Road in Marley. Investigators say Phelan lost control of his Toyota, which spun to the right and left the road. The Camry then struck a guardrail before rolling over.

Authorities say Phelan was declared dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel and his body was taken the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The preliminary cause of the crash was failure to remain in a single lane. It appears that excessive speed was a contributing factor, police say. Phelan was wearing a seatbelt.
