Annapolis 1864 Commission

After a lengthy period without a proper commemoration of Maryland Emancipation, the community lobbied the City of Annapolis to create a Commission whose direct objective would be to celebrate Maryland Emancipation by raising funds and organizing events to properly celebrate this anniversary. The Commission was constituted and is holding a series of events in commemoration. · 12 Noon–3:00 pm, on Sat. Oct. 18, 2014, Fundraiser: The gala event is being held at Belvoir Manor, 1487 Generals Highway, Crownsville, MD 21032. There will be games, artifacts, and participation in a current archeological dig at recently discovered slave quarters. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 11:00 am–4:00 pm to help with setup, directing guests, helping with youth activities, and cleanup. For more information

Annapolis High School
Volunteers are needed to help with setup and take down of tables for the College & Career Fair being held on Sat., Oct. 18, 2014 at Annapolis High School, 2600 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401. Volunteers will be needed in late morning on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014 for set-up of tables in the gymnasium and at the end of the Fair at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 18 for take down activities. Hammond-Harwood House
Volunteer docents, 18 and older, are needed to serve as weekend tour guides; those able to work to or more weekend days per month (Noon – 5pm) are preferred. Training is provided. Volunteers are also needed for publicity, children’s events, research and more. There are opportunities for volunteers to work at home on projects such as woodworking or sewing upholstered slip covers for pillows that are on display in the collection and more. · 4:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m., Fri., Oct. 24, 2014, Annual Pumpkin Walk: This fun event, which includes storytelling, a costume parade, games, face painting, and more, will be held at Hammond-Harwood House, 19 Maryland Ave., Annapolis, 21401. Volunteers are needed to help with setup from 3:30-4:00 pm, to help with games during the event and with cleanup after the event. Happy Helpers for the Homeless, Saturdays and Sundays
This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless. Volunteers, as young as 6, are needed Saturdays (11:30am-2:30pm) and Sundays (1:00-4:00pm) to assist in distributing items and bag lunches in downtown Baltimore and Glen Burnie. Ongoing donations needed: men’s socks, toiletry items, men’s clothing, blankets, shoes in very good condition, sturdy napkins/paper towels, mustard, juice boxes, fold-over sandwich bags, lunch meat and fresh fruit. Volunteers can meet in Glen Burnie to caravan up to Baltimore. Bag a Breakfast Project. Put together a bag breakfast for a homeless individual. Include box of cereal, with spoon and cup, poptart, fruit, hot chocolate package with cup and spoon, juice box, and napkin. Can be done anytime. Just drop off at Happy Helpers.
· 7:30–10:30 a.m, Sat., Oct. 25, 2014, Make a Difference Day: This is the 21st year Happy Helpers has held this event. A group of those we serve will be taken for breakfast at the Glen Burnie Golden Corral, and afterwards clients will receive job search assistance, haircuts, clothing, toiletry gift bags, and lunch.
· 5–9 pm, Sat., Oct. 25, 2014, “Light the Night” Walk for Leukemia & Lymphoma: Happy Helpers raise pledges and walk in honor of Thomas Cleaver, III, Cindy Cox, and Mr. Joseph Nowalski. Participants will meet at Cromwell Light Rail Station in Glen Burnie at 5:00 pm. Food will be served at the end of the walk.
· 10:00 am–11:30 pm, Sat., Nov. 22, 2014 “National Family Volunteer Day”: Hundreds of sandwiches will be prepared at Grace Point Presbyterian Church, 615 Donaldson Ave., Severn, MD 21144, while simultaneously Hundreds of Christmas presents will be wrapped at Happy Helpers Headquarters.
Sixth Annual College & Career Fair, Sat., Oct. 18, 2014
Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards, 4th District of Maryland is hosting the 6th Annual College & Career Fair at Annapolis High School, 2600 Riva Rd., Annapolis 21401, on Sat. Oct. 18, 2014 from8:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. High School & Middle School Students can plan for future success with experts from a variety of educational related organizations, including experts from the U.S. Department of Education. Attendees at this free event will learn about free money for college, on-the-spot admissions and scholarships, and preparing college applications, resumes, and cover letters. Walk the Walk Foundation
The goal of the Foundation is to provide avenues that directly benefit kids in need by partnering with professionals, volunteers, donors, program recipients, and other nonprofits whose focus fits the Foundation’s mission. Our main programs at present are Christmas, Back to School, and Diaper Drives. There are always volunteer opportunities for all ages, and many families love to help out together. Volunteer opportunities change seasonally, and include: labeling and stamping envelopes, assembling bags with books, organizing & checking in presents, building bikes, writing notes to families, and more. There is also a current need for volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors. Winter Relief Program, mid-October through early April–Rotating Locations
Almost 70 Houses of Worship and a dozen partnering churches will provide sheltering sites together with Arundel House of Hope to support a shelter program from late October until early April. For one week at a time, participating churches host men and women in need of a hot meal and shelter for the night and breakfast the next morning. The Winter Relief Program needs volunteers to assist at the Intake Center at 514 N. Crain Hwy. in Glen Burnie and to be transportation escorts for showers for our guests.
