As part of its free monthly film series, the New Deal Cafe is showing selected shorts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking about international civil rights., followed by Oliver Stone's film, South of the Border.
Stone's road trip across five countries explores the social and political movements as well as the mainstream media's misconception's of South America. In casual conversations with Presidents Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Lula da Silva (Brazil), Cristina Kirchner (Argentina), as well as her husband and ex-President Nėstor Kirchner, Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), and Raúl Castro (Cuba), Stone gains unprecedented access and sheds new light on the transformations in the region.
Community discussion will be led by Greenbelt's Eugenia Kalnay and Vanderlei Martins, Professors at University of Maryland, who are from Argentina and Brazil, respectively.
