Population and Climate Change: Lecture and Discussion

Greenbelt’s own Eugenia Kalnay, U of MD’s professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, and her son Jorge Rivas present basic facts about population growth and sustainability. Meaningful discussion of climate change can’t ignore this ‘elephant in the room.’ Human population has grown to the extent that humanity now completely dominates the natural ecosystem, with population being a main driver of climate change.

The concept of ecological economics presented here, differing from conventional thinking, asserts that the Earth does not have unlimited resources. Human and natural systems interdependence is addressed with a simple model.
