Havre de Grace will hold a ceremony to honor 47 local residents who lost their lives in World War I, 100 years after the war ended.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — To honor those who gave their lives during World War I, the city of Havre de Grace and Harford County will host an Armistice Day commemoration. There were 47 local citizens who died in the war, according to Harford County officials.

Armistice Day was first recognized on Nov. 11, 1919, one year after the Allied powers signed an agreement that ended World War I, according to the Library of Congress.

Havre de Grace Mayor Bill Martin and Harford County Executive Barry Glassman will toll the bells at Tydings Park on Nov. 11 to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

“From the American Revolution to the present, Harford County citizens have answered the call to defend our nation, and World War I was no exception," Glassman said in a statement.

"In honor of the 47 local citizens who gave their lives, and all World War I veterans who fought for our freedoms...I have asked our volunteer fire companies to sound their sirens," Glassman said, "and I invite all citizens to take a moment, wherever they may be, to remember the great sacrifice of these true American heroes."
