City Announces Grand Opening of Concord Point Park
The spotlight will shine on the area next to the Concord Point Lighthouse.
Before summer officially starts, the city of Havre de Grace is giving citizens more space to enjoy the waterfront.
Mayor Wayne Dougherty and the Havre de Grace City Council invite the public to a ribbon-cutting at Concord Point Park on Saturday, June 7, to celebrate plans for extending the Promenade that are coming to fruition.
Last fall, the city purchased 701 Concord Street from Havre de Grace City Councilman Steve Gamatoria after the issue went to referendum. At the time of the $1.29 million purchase, Gamatoria was not in office.
In March, the Susquehanna Hose Company used the vacant house on the property for live fire training, and it has since been demolished.
"We took the house down and graded the area," John Van Gilder, spokesman for the city of Havre de Grace, said.
During the transition, there has been fencing around the property as it went from a residential parcel to open space.

"We’re trying to get grass to grow before we open it to the public," Van Gilder said.
Now, it will become the open space that city officials envisioned.

"We anticipate putting at least 350 more linear feet of promenade along the waterfront," Van Gilder said. "In theory, we want the same look ... all the way around the water's edge to Concord Street, so it almost doubles" the Promenade.
The city has received a $20,000 grant for engineering and has applied for a $100,000 grant from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority to further the project, he added.
The mayor and other officials will cut the ribbon next to the Concord Point Lighthouse at Concord Point Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7.
