City Sewer System to Undergo Smoke Tests

A non-toxic smoke process will take place from July 11 to 21 in Havre de Grace.

If you notice a slight amount of smoke coming from your storm drains or valves in July, don't be alarmed.

The City of Havre de Grace and the Maryland Environmental Service will be conducting leak tests by forcing smoke into the lines of the city's sewer system.

A news release from City Hall indicated "leak testing is part of our continuing effort to provide a safe, economical, efficient and environmentally sound sewer system throughout Havre de Grace."

  • Plumbing vents are inadequate, defective or improperly installed
  • Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers or other drain areas are either dry, defective, improperly installed or missing
  • Pipe, connections and seals on your sewer line in and under your building are damaged, defective, have plugs missing or are improperly installed

If smoke enters your home during testing, a plumber should be called upon for further investigation. City staff will render assistance, according to the release, but "the correction of defects in pipes and sewer lines on private property is the responsibility of the owner."

The tests will occur over a two-week period, but localized testing may only last a few moments.
