Envisioning Havre de Grace High School's Future: Replacement

Replacing Havre de Grace High School would involve 36 months of construction and cost $71.25 million, according to a report commissioned by Harford County Public Schools.

The Board of Education is scheduled to vote Monday, Dec. 3, on how to proceed with the school's aging infrastructure.

Superintendent Robert Tomback and a group of architects presented the board with four options last month: renovation, modernization, modernization with Congress Avenue closed and replacement.

The presenters recommended replacing Havre de Grace High School, which they outlined as follows:

Construction

• 225,270-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility
• entry road to new school building from Juniata at Congress
• traffic light at Juniata where new school entrance is
• ball field and multipurpose field where current school buildings are

Demolition

• school buildings between Adams and Juniata

Construction time: 36 months
Cost: $71,250,486
Opportunities: meets school system's standards for safety and education; existing school buildings could house classes during construction; increased efficiency and supervision with one-building design; room for expansion (not available in current location, or with modernization and renovation options)
Challenges: site is partially in a floodplain, construction would require permitting/mitigation for building near wetlands, there is no power/water hookup
