Havre de Grace Honors Heroes on Memorial Day
Havre de Grace held a remembrance at Tydings Park Monday.
The smell of grills and the sight of family gatherings could be seen throughout Monday, marking the observance of Memorial Day.

With the sound of bagpipes heard in the distance, a brightly colored historic plane flying above, and memorial wreaths lying near the monument, Monday’s memorial service at honored those who served.

“Today we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Mayor Wayne Dougherty said. “Today is a somber day of reflection. We should each and every day remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom; those who served with pride. The Army, the Marine Core, the Air Force, the Navy, Merchant Marines, the Coast Guard and members of all our National Guards who are very active today.”
Dougherty, Richard Ferguson of the , Pastor Norman Obenshain of the , and keynote speaker Col. Darryl J. Briggs delivered speeches thanking the men and women that have sacrificed their lives for others.

The wreaths that were laid at the monument in Tydings Park also held a special meaning that dated back to a poem written by LTC John McCrae titled “In Flanders Field” during World War II.
Amanda McFaden, of Amanda’s Florist, explained that three of the wreaths, provided by the Ladies Auxilary, contained poppy flowers, which were handmade by local veterans.
