A New Year's Eve Party at the Havre de Grace Community Center will double as a volunteer orientation for the War of 1812 bicentennial festivities.

The New Year's eve party will run from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. from Dec. 31 to Jan 1.

Havre de Grace's own DJ Mark Hemler will bring the music, and the chef from Father Martin's Ashley is providing heavy hors d'oeuvres.

Proceeds from the $35 ticket sales will go toward the War of 1812 bicentennial in Havre de Grace this May, when the city will host activities from reenactments to tours in remembrance of the British attack at Concord Point on May 3, 1813.

A committee of local leaders began planning for the War of 1812 bicentennial in May. Now the group needs citizens to help carry out the celebration.

“I’m trying to get people from all over Havre de Grace, from soccer to dance troop—the more eclectic the group, the better,” said Brigitte Peters, manager of Tourism and Marketing for Havre de Grace, during the War of 1812 committee's December meeting.

At the New Year's Eve party, there will be dollar beer, dollar wine, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and fireworks at midnight visible from the Community Center. Guests are also welcome to bring their own distilled liquor.

“I really want this to be an awareness event, a recruiting party for people that normally don’t go out on New Year’s Eve or don’t know a whole lot about what’s going on [with the bicentennial]," Peters said.

In addition to the party at the community center, “there will be a shuttle from the event to see the duck drop," Peters said, "so you get to see lots of sides of the city and all that is happening."

This article was updated at 8:55 a.m. to reflect that BYOB refers to distilled liquor only.
