Havre de Grace Remembers 9/11

Flags, ceremonies and other tributes in Harford County will mark the 14th year since the 9/11 attacks.

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed in acts of terrorism at the Pentagon and World Trade Center as well as on a plane that crashed in Shanksville, Pa.

Among those who lost their lives was Joseph V. Maggitti, 47, of Abingdon, who was reportedly at the World Trade Center for a morning meeting.

Deputies from Harford County’s motor unit journeyed to the 9/11 memorial in New York last month.

For the month of September, Harford County is flying a special flag in remembrance of 9/11 outside the government administration building on Main Street.

On Sept. 11, the U.S. Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command is holding a Patriot Day remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in Aberdeen Proving Ground’s Myer Auditorium, with a light breakfast.

First responders can get a free breakfast entree at Chick-fil-A by showing their identification as a police officer, firefighter, EMT, nurse or military member (both active and retired). The Hero Appreciation Breakfast is only at the Constant Friendship and Aberdeen locations from 6 to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 11.

Commuters will see the annual crowd showing their appreciation along Interstate 95. From 3 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 11, there will be a flag-waving on the Joppa overpass, The Aegis reports.

At 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, there will be a military tribute concert at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Charlie Zahm and his band will perform patriotic music at this event, where children under 16 are admitted free and others must pay $10 for a ticket, according to the Cecil Whig.

Over the weekend, the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company invites the community to an observance to remember 9/11. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1520 Whiteford Road in Street. See the event page on Facebook here.
