Havre de Grace School Had 'Issues' with Heat

School facilities personnel had their hands full Wednesday in Harford County, including in Havre de Grace, according to administrators.

In Havre de Grace, “the problem with heat was at [Havre de Grace] Middle School...” according to Joseph Licata, chief of administration for Harford County Public Schools.

Licata provided the following statement to Havre de Grace Patch in response to an inquiry about heating issues at Havre de Grace schools:

Yes, we experienced issues with the heat, but our Facilities Department responded and corrected the issue. We have several schools experiencing heat issues this morning, and all are being responded to by Facilities folks.

It is a rare occasion that we would send the students in if there was no heat in the entire building. However, there were areas of the building without heat, so students are moved to those locations until the problem is corrected. If the issue occurs as students are arriving and there is no heat in the entire building, we keep the students on the warm buses until a determination is made. In these circumstances, Facilities personnel are dispatched to assess the problem; determine a timeframe for correction; and advise central office. Depending on the assessment, we will make a decision about closing the building for the day. We generally err on the side of caution especially when temperatures are low like the past few days. However, we must notify parents of a decision to close so arrangements for daycare can be made by working parents. Hope this helps!
