HdG Police Chief Reflects On 2018, Makes Resolutions For 2019

After what she described as a busy 2018, Havre de Grace Police Chief Teresa Walter turns to key issues facing the city and county.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — With the beginning of the new year, Havre de Grace Police Chief Teresa Walter shared her thoughts on 2018 and a resolution for 2019. Both were centered around the idea of community.

"As we reflect back, it has been a busy year," Walter wrote on Wednesday, Jan. 2, on the Havre de Grace Police Department's Facebook page. "Our officers have had thousands of contacts with folks in 2018 whether it was on a traffic stop, while walking foot patrol, investigating a call for service, resolving quality of life issues or at one of our memorable special events."

Of the thousands of encounters, she said, it was "impressive" that "the overwhelming number of contacts have been positive."

She thanked everyone for making Havre de Grace "one of Maryland’s safest communities," from the police officers to city administrators.

"I also want to thank all of our community who have come together to help us out by looking at various ways to prevent crime so they and their neighbors do not become a victim," Walter wrote. "We are truly appreciative for our community’s help."

Looking to 2019, Walter mentioned three issues affecting the city of Havre de Grace that mirrored the challenges facing Harford County as a whole.

"Every New Year affords us the opportunity to achieve positive results," Walter said. "The Havre de Grace Police Department shares common concerns with our law enforcement colleagues in Harford County such as homelessness, mental health and addiction issues."

In 2018, Harford County established a crisis line to help those who are struggling with mental health and other issues. The hotline is staffed 24/7.

For the year ahead, Walter made this resolution: "...work together with our community groups, faith partners and organizations to make a tangible difference" in 2019.

Continued Walter: "In Havre de Grace, community engagement is a big part of what we do and is paramount to our success as we enter the New Year. I appreciate the opportunity to grow together as a community and especially when important issues arise throughout the year."

Wrote Walter: "As we prepare for 2019 we are committed to working with our city administration, and community partners to once again ensure everyone’s safety and for the wellness of our city."
