HHS Students Get Taste of Big Apple During Veterans Day Parade Trip

The Warrior Pride marching band took a trip to New York for Veterans Day weekend.

Students from Havre de Grace High School who played in the Veterans Day Parade saw much more of New York City than the parade route.

The group got a taste of the big city, watching the Broadway show Spiderman, Turn Off the Dark and meeting other marching bands participating in the Nov. 11 national parade, Havre de Grace High School Band Director Rick Hauf said.

In particular, Hauf said the students "really enjoyed" a dance and dinner cruise with students from Kansas.

Before Monday's parade, the Warriors joined 1,000 high school band members from across the country at Vietnam Veterans Plaza in New York City to perform a tribute to veterans called "Band of Pride" on Sunday.

According to Hauf, Havre de Grace students were mixed in with those from New Orleans, Kansas and Illinois for the concert.

On Monday, the Warriors marched in the Veterans Day Parade as more than 600,000 people watched from the streets of New York, according to parade organizers.

"It was such an honor to march down Fifth Avenue in tribute to our veterans," Hauf said of the Nov. 11 Parade. "It is a parade I am certain we will all remember for a lifetime."

Other events where the Warrior Pride band performs include July 4 parades, Christmas parades and home football games, Hauf said. The group has also traveled to Walt Disney World in years past and performed in the 2013 Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington, D.C.
