Holly's Hope 5K Run Winners Keep It in the Family
Brother and sister capture both titles in race.
The ultimate winners of SARC’s recent 5k Run/ 1 Mile Walk are the people who seek out the services when they have been a victim of domestic violence. But on Saturday, October 10 the actual winners of the men’s and women’s divisions had something in common - their parents. That’s right! Coming in first at a time of 21:03 in the men’s division was 14 year old 8th grader, Russell Davis. His sister, Lydia, a Junior at Bel Air High, was just 5 minutes off his pace at 26:07. Russell was really motivated because last year he finished in third place at the first Holly’s Hope 5K and so he trained and pushed hard to take the top prize. Lydia volunteered at the event last year. She was motivated to do well as her sister, Grace, who is at college and came in first in the women’s division last year. Lydia and Russell both plan to return next year and repeat their performance!
Tracy Carter was recognized for being the top individual fundraiser.
High energy was added to the race this year with WAMD’s Hannah Timm who interviewed organizers and participants on live radio. Amy Wood, mother of Ethan Brito, explained that although he would’ve enjoyed being at the race he inaugurated last year for SARC, he is a Cadet at West Point. She and Ethan’s girlfriend Megan Kotrla worked in his absence to keep his vision of raising awareness of SARC’s resources while honoring his Aunt Holly. Holly spoke passionately about her gratitude to SARC for being there for her when she was ready to leave a dangerous partner.
The team from Harford Community College, chaired by Alex Adams, raised over $1,000. Several employees from Blue Dot, including General Manager Jeffrey Stagnoli, who run after work on a regular basis, also came out for the event.
SARC is most grateful to the businesses and individuals who supported the race: Northeastern Supply, Blue Dot of Maryland, Chick-Fil-A, Southern States, I-95 Magazine, Raymond James, The Godddard School, WAMD and Yogurt Mountain.
There were dozens of volunteers before, during and after the event who helped to make it all come together. Contact Megan Paice at 410-836-8431 if you’d like to support the work of SARC by volunteering.
SARC is a registered 501(c) (3) charitable organization.
