James Carroll Vancherie Jr. Passed Away at 90

The established Havre de Grace businessman and politician died Nov. 2.

Former Havre de Grace City Councilman James Carroll Vancherie Jr. died Nov. 2. He was 90.

Vancherie served as a councilman for four years, according to his obituary. He was also a lifetime member of the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps. His father was mayor in 1961, according to the Havre de Grace Record, which credited him with renaming the city park "Tydings Park" in honor of the Havre de Grace war hero and U.S. Senator who passed that year.

In addition to politics, Vancherie was immersed in the business life of downtown Havre de Grace. In 1943, he opened an eatery called Vancherie's Cafe and Snack Bar with his wife, Gussie, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Gussie Vancherie passed away July 1, and the establishment on Union Avenue closed in recent years.

Visitation for James Carroll Vancherie Jr. will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Zellman Funeral Home, 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Zellman Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Angel Hill Cemetery in Havre de Grace.
