HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Investigators say they are looking into what caused a fatal, three-alarm house fire near Havre de Grace. One person was found dead at the residence, where the fire marshal said nobody else was home.

Neighbors reported smoke and flames coming from the front of the home in the 4000 block of Webster Road at 12:19 p.m. Wednesday, according to the fire marshal.

Officials said it took two and a half hours and about 50 firefighters to control the blaze.

The Level Volunteer Fire Company led the effort to put out the house fire, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Those first at the scene said they found a home engulfed in flames with a collapse and called for backup, Gardiner said. He said crews from multiple counties assisted.

Neighbors told The Aegis the flames were "as high as the trees" and the house appeared to be a "big black ball of smoke."

The fire marshal confirmed after 3 p.m. that the blaze was deadly.

The cause and origin of the blaze have not yet been released. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and identity of the victim.

Assisting the fire marshal in the investigation are the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and Maryland State Police.
