Missing Man Anchored His Sailboat Near Bridge in HdG: Police

Authorities are asking for help finding a man whose sailboat was found anchored off the shores of Havre de Grace without him aboard.

Jeffery Swank, 58, anchored his boat along the Susquehanna River near the Amtrak bridge, according to Candy Thomson, spokeswoman for Maryland Natural Resources Police.

A relative contacted authorities this week after not being able to reach Swank, who lives on his 42-foot sailboat and is a resident of Berwyn, PA, according to Thomson. The white sailboat is a 1978 Irwin registered in Delaware, she said.

Swank was last seen Tuesday, police said. When officials went to check on him, his boat was anchored offshore near the bridge in Havre de Grace but he was nowhere to be found, according to Thomson.

“We have no idea where he is. That’s why we [sent] out the photo of him,” Thomson told Patch Friday afternoon.

Natural Resources Police released a photo of Swank Thursday in hopes of hearing from people who may have seen Swank.

“Clearly, people who live on boats go on shore for supplies, they go ashore to go out and be social, so he could be on land—he could be visiting friends, for all we know,” Thomson said.

Maryland Natural Resources Police sent divers to look for Swank near the sailboat Thursday, and the search continued on Friday, according to Thomson. She said that police are not ruling anything out.

“What we’re trying to do is gather information,” Thomson said.
