Mother-Daughter Team Paddle Into Havre de Grace On 300-Mile Kayak Journey
A 14-year breast cancer survivor raising support for breast cancer research at University of Maryland School of Medicine.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD - Carolyn Choate, 59, and her daughter, Sydney Turnbull, 27, will arrive at Tydings Park in Havre de Grace at noon on Saturday, Aug. 26. This will be mile 250 on their 300-mile kayak trip that began on Aug. 10 in Port Jervis, New York.
Carolyn and Sydney began this kayak trip to raise awareness and support for future generations of breast cancer research. Choate is a 14-year breast cancer survivor.
They are raising funds for an endowment honoring the late Dr. Angela Brodie, a scientist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine who pioneered the use of aromatase inhibitors to treat a common form of breast cancer. Carolyn credits the work of Dr. Brodie with saving her life.

Havre de Grace is a special stop for Carolyn not only because it is her birthplace, but also because she will honor her late cousin and sister of Sen. Norman, Anne Hellmann, a registered nurse and community health educator who lost her life to cancer.
