Peach Bottom Siren Test Planned

The sirens will sound on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Community members in Harford County may hear sirens in the afternoon on Wednesday, Dec. 5. That's because the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station will be conducting its semiannual test of the emergency siren system.

During the test, officials say people might want to bring their pets inside.

According to Peach Bottom, the siren test will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

The sirens will sound for 3 minutes, according to the Harford County Department of Emergency Services.

"There is no need for you to take any precautionary measures except that you may want to bring your pets indoors while sirens are sounding," Harford County emergency officials said.

A couple of people said in response to the notification that they were not sure that Wednesday was an appropriate time to conduct the test.

"I would rethink this. It's a National Day of Mourning," one person posted on the Harford County Department of Emergency Services Facebook page.

"Maybe change the day, since [Wednesday] is a national day of mourning for President Bush," another wrote.

President Donald Trump has designated Wednesday, Dec. 5, as a national day of mourning.

All Maryland state government agencies and offices will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 5, to honor the lifetime of service of the 41st U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Monday.

An Exelon spokesperson confirmed to Patch that the test was still on for Wednesday, Dec. 5. It is one of a series of tests this week across Exelon plants.
