Property Crimes Drop, Violent Crime Holds Steady in Havre de Grace in 2015: FBI

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Violent crimes known to law enforcement stayed level in the city of Havre de Grace from 2014 to 2015, according to new data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Havre de Grace had the same number of violent crimes — 34 — in both 2015 and 2014, according to the FBI's 2015 Uniform Crime Report (UCR).

The city fared better than the nation as a whole, where the FBI reports there was an increase in violent crime of 3.9 percent in 2015. Violent crime involves force or the threat of force: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault are classified as violent crimes, based on the FBI's definition.

While Havre de Grace saw an increase in rapes and robberies, there were marked decreases in aggravated assault and property crimes, data show. Property crime includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Here's a look at the crimes reported between the two years as listed in the latest data. There were no reported murders or non-negligent manslaughter crimes reported either year.

Note: The population in Havre de Grace was 13,639 in 2015 and 13,625 in 2014, according to the FBI data.

The Uniform Crime Report serves as a resource that informs decisions from budgeting allocations to anti-crime legislation.

While the data does serve as a guide, the FBI cautions against using the reports as a means of comparing different locales, since there are many factors at play, including but not limited to population density and degree of urbanization, the number of young people, economic disparities and family conditions.
