HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The Harford County School Board decided at its last meeting to rely on the Maryland Association of Boards of Education as the organization to help conduct a search for Harford Schools’ next superintendent.

Founded in 1957, the Maryland Association of Boards of Education is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to serving and supporting boards of education in Maryland. All 24 Maryland boards of education are members of MABE.

The school board agreed Monday to pay no more than $38,000 to MABE to lead the search for and hiring of a new superintendent of schools by June. The process will be carried out in phases, board members learned at the meeting, starting with planning then advertising, recruiting, screening and selecting candidates to be interviewed.

After finding himself embroiled in a controversy over missing school property and personal conduct at an education conference in Louisiana two years ago, former HCPS Superintendent Sean Bulson was fired last month.

Bulson has been at the helm of the school district for almost eight years. He will be paid through June 30, newly elected board president Lauren Paige said during the school board's Feb. 9 meeting.

Bulson, who earns $293,220 annually, has been on paid leave since January, when numerous officials lobbied for his resignation after a 911 call of an incident in his hotel room in New Orleans, La., raised eyebrows.

Dyann Mack, one of Bulson’s deputy superintendents, is currently serving as acting superintendent.
