Student in Custody After Threat, Lockdown: HdG Police

Havre de Grace High School student may be charged for threat that put authorities on alert and school on lockdown, police say.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — A dispute between a 16-year-old Havre de Grace High School student and a group escalated into a scenario that put the school on lockdown Thursday morning, police reported.

At 10 a.m., a student received a group text that referenced a shooting to occur at Havre de Grace High School, according to a statement from the Havre de Grace School Resource Officers.

The recipient notified the school resource officer 15 minutes later, the statement said.

The school resource officer alerted others, and the school was put into lockdown while officials worked to locate the suspect, who was identified as a 16-year-old Havre de Grace High School student, the statement said.

He was taken into custody at 11 a.m. and charges are pending, according to the statement.

“This entire incident appears to have stemmed from a disagreement between the suspect and another group of individuals,” police said in the statement.

Police said that there were no weapons found, and the school remained on alert until noon, when officials determined “there was no evidence to substantiate the threats in the text message.”

Many parents, worried about their children, came to the school on Congress Avenue, and officials said they appreciated the families’ patience as authorities worked to follow protocols and resolve the situation.

“As many of our officers are parents, we completely understand the concern and sincerely appreciate the understanding by the parents who arrived on the scene,” police said in a statement. “Thank you all for your support, understanding and patience demonstrated to ensure the implementation of safety procedures could be accomplished. You all were a tremendous help.”
