Two Treated for Heat-Related Emergencies in Havre de Grace: Officials

Since Saturday, two people in Havre de Grace have suffered from heat-related illness, according to emergency personnel.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — First responders have been called to eight heat-related emergencies since Saturday afternoon in Harford County, according to Jenn Chenworth, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

Two of those calls were in Havre de Grace—one on Monday in the 2000 block of Rock Glenn Boulevard, the other on Saturday in the 400 block of Lewis Lane, she said.

Officials advise people to stay hydrated and out of the heat as much as possible to avoid heat-related emergencies. Those who must be outside should drink water before, during and after activity; wear loose-fitting, light clothing; and take frequent breaks.

Five of the heat-related emergency calls came on Monday, when temperatures soared in the high 90s—and above 105 degrees on the heat index. In fact, on Monday,temperatures at BWI hit 100 degrees for the first time since 2012; the record triple-digit temp was also reached there in 2010, the National Weather Service reported.

The people treated this week in Harford County had conditions that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Chenworth, who said seven people were taken to local hospitals, while one refused treatment.

Monday's heat-related emergency incidents in Harford County occurred in the following locations, Chenworth said:

  • 2000 block of Rock Glenn Boulevard in Havre de Grace
  • 1700 block of Trimble Road in Edgewood
  • 100 block of North Parke Street in Aberdeen
  • 1300 block of Pulaski Highway in Edgewood
  • 4600 block of Appliance Drive in Belcamp

Over the weekend, there were three additional heat-related incidents, including one on Saturday involving a child, Chenworth said. Other than that, all the calls involved adults who were affected by the heat.
Saturday's heat emergencies occurred in the 800 block of Long Drive in Aberdeen and the 400 block of Lewis Lane; Sunday's incident was in the 100 block of Breakwater Court in Joppa.
