Warriors Girls Soccer Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

The Havre de Grace girls soccer team is getting a leg up on women's health. The team wore pink socks in its game against North East on Oct. 17 to raise awareness about breast cancer.

"All of the parents were proud of their daughter’s support of such a worthy cause," said Michele Nye, whose twin daughters are on the Warriors soccer team. "Obviously, if breast cancer is not cured, statistics show that some of OUR girls wearing the pink socks could/will develop breast cancer later in life."

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths from breast cancer have been declining due to heightened awareness, which has led to an increase in diagnosis and treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The Warriors in Havre de Grace are also wearing pink ribbons in their hair during games in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Wednesday's game was the one time that the girls could wear a color that is different from their uniforms. According to officials, each team must wear only the colors on its uniforms during games to avoid confusion on the field.
