​William Melvin Childers, 84, of Havre de Grace

William Melvin Childers, 84, of Havre de Grace, passed away on March 31, 2017, at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air.

Born in Abingdon, Virginia, he was the son of William Calvin and Ida Francis (Blevins) Childers and was the husband, for 60 years, of his dearly loved wife, the late Betty Pauline (Polly) Childers.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served our country during the Korean War and had worked for the U.S. Government as a Quality Specialist. He adored his grandchildren and was a helpful and generous person who had a heart for the less fortunate. He led the church choir and taught adult Sunday school. He wrote two books: "Welcome Home" a history of the church, and "Until Then," an autobiography.

Mr. Childers is survived by his children, Rebecca Childers-Hunt of Rising Sun and Marshal Childers of New Park, Pennsylvania; his sister, Ola Aten of Peoria, Illinois; and grandchildren, Abigail Childers, Allison Childers and Jonas Childers.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, Steven Anthony Childers and Thomas Melvin Childers; three brothers; and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, April 3, at McComas Funeral Home, 1317 Cokesbury Road, Abingdon.

There will be additional visitation on Tuesday, April 4, at Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church from 10-11 a.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, at Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, 1303 Prospect Mill Road, Bel Air.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, 1303 Prospect Mill Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.
